Maritime UK Launches Pioneering Campaign to Promote STEM Careers for Girls, Timed with IMO International Women in Maritime Day

To raise the profile of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) roles for women in the maritime industry, Maritime UK has launched a unique social media campaign named ‘Come to Work with Me.’ The campaign, supported by QinetiQ, was launched to coincide with the International Maritime Organization’s International Women in Maritime Day.

The maritime industry, integral to global trade and supporting over one million jobs within the UK alone, is nonetheless marked by a conspicuous underrepresentation of women, particularly in STEM roles. An estimated 90% of world trade is carried by sea, underscoring the sector’s significance to the global economy and the importance of ensuring it is diverse and inclusive.

The new campaign seeks to inspire young women to consider careers in the industry, breaking down perceived barriers and highlighting the myriad opportunities available in STEM-based maritime roles. This effort aligns with the Maritime 2050 Strategy’s commitment to nurturing a diverse and inclusive future workforce.

The initiative kicks off with the support of QinetiQ, showcasing a video that offers insight into the daily work of an Associate Naval Architect at their Haslar Site in Gosport. The campaign will encourage other maritime organisations to contribute and amplify the initiative’s message.

Baroness Vere, Maritime Minister, voiced her support, stating that increasing female representation in the maritime industry is key to futureproofing the sector. She emphasised the necessity of demonstrating that the maritime industry is inclusive and open to all, vital for boosting trade, creating jobs, and delivering goods.

Emily Hewitt, Associate Naval Architect at QinetiQ, shared her enthusiasm about participating in the campaign: “It is crucial that young women and girls are continually shown that there is a space for them in this industry. Days like this are key to breaking down barriers and historic norms. Being able to raise awareness of my work in a fantastic role on a platform such as this one makes me delighted.”

Janet Fallon, Interim CEO of Maritime UK, also expressed her pride in launching a campaign to promote STEM career opportunities for girls in the maritime industry. Fallon reinforced the goal of creating a diverse and inclusive future workforce, pledging to inspire young females to explore the wealth of opportunities within the maritime sector.

With its inaugural campaign, Maritime UK has ignited an essential conversation on inclusivity in the maritime industry and sown the seeds of inspiration for the next generation of female maritime professionals.
