In a move aimed at fortifying maritime safety and operational efficiency, the Maritime Skills Academy (MSA) has announced a new three-year training partnership with Red Funnel, a renowned ferry operator. The agreement marks a significant investment in MSA, empowering the training provider to double its capacity.
This collaborative venture also sees Red Funnel making maritime training history as the first users of MSA’s 270-degree bridge simulator, a state-of-the-art facility featuring Wartsila/Transas NTPRO software. This immersive training tool replicates realistic maritime situations and challenges, providing an unrivalled, safe environment for Ship Handling, Bridge Resource Management, and Bridge Watch Keeping courses.
MSA’s Director of Training and Simulation, Captain Josip Kulas, detailed how this technology will offer bespoke training to Red Funnel’s crew. “The scenarios are placed in Red Funnel’s ships’ usual routes, replicating their day-to-day operations, but of course with added challenges,” Kulas explained.
These simulation scenarios will allow crew members to experience and manage potential situations they may encounter in their regular operational routes, providing an opportunity for improving response times and decision-making abilities.
Captain Kulas expressed his gratitude for being part of the partnership and optimism about its potential impacts, stating, “We are honoured to be part of this cooperation and look forward to the positive impact this collaboration will have on the maritime industry as a whole.”
This partnership reinforces Red Funnel’s commitment to ensuring maritime safety and showcases the Maritime Skills Academy’s innovative approach to delivering industry-leading training. Furthermore, it underpins the vital role that practical, scenario-based training plays in developing and maintaining crucial maritime skills. This collaboration promises to make substantial strides in upskilling seafarers and raising the bar for maritime safety and proficiency.
