Harland & Wolff, renowned in the UK’s maritime industry, has officially launched its 2023 Apprenticeship programme, marking its third consecutive year of welcoming apprentices. The programme has already seen a successful intake of 65 apprentices spread across all operational sites within the group.
The programme was initiated in 2021 across four strategic locations to equip apprentices with a rich tapestry of practical and theoretical skills requisite in the maritime engineering industry. The initiative signifies Harland & Wolff’s strategic move towards re-energising the UK’s shipbuilding industry with an influx of young talent.
The apprenticeships are categorised into three primary areas – trade, business support, and technical. These classifications aim to provide apprentices with a wide array of transferable skills, effectively enabling them to navigate the ever-evolving maritime industry. Harland & Wolff’s dedicated workforce plays an instrumental role in this process by passing on their knowledge and skills to the emerging generation of shipbuilders and engineers.
The 2023 apprenticeship programme represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Harland & Wolff to imbue a fresh batch of shipbuilders with world-class skills refined and perfected within the group. This effort ensures the creation of a highly skilled cadre of maritime engineers and guarantees that the high performance and quality standards characteristic of Harland & Wolff persist across generations.
Harland & Wolff’s continued success, reflected in several recent contract wins, including the prestigious Fleet Solid Support Warship programme award, translates into long-term and high-quality employment opportunities across the group.
Andrew Jackson, Group Director of Human Resources for Harland & Wolff, shared his enthusiasm:
“We are honoured to be able to make a difference to the communities surrounding our sites through our apprenticeship programme. With the signing of the FSS contract, which is revitalising the shipbuilding industry across our sites, we must be able to develop the younger generation’s skills to accommodate the upcoming opportunities.”
Jackson continued, “Through this initiative, we aim to not only empower the local economies in the regions we operate in but also attract youth prospects to maritime engineering.”
